When treating a patient with a corneal ulcer, considerations include the prevention or treatment of infection, pain management, as well as the promotion of healing. The consideration of serum or plasma drops as part of a treatment plan for patients with melting corneal ulcers or indolent corneal ulcers is mentioned in many references, however there has been little published that is considered evidence-based regarding efficacy or protocols. The focus of this study was to examine the incidence of contamination of these drops and the potential risks for complications associated with its use.
