When treating a patient with a corneal ulcer, considerations include the prevention or treatment of infection, pain management, as well as the promotion of healing. The consideration of serum or plasma drops as part of a treatment plan for patients with melting corneal ulcers or indolent corneal ulcers is mentioned in many references, however there has been little published that is considered evidence-based regarding efficacy or protocols. The focus of this study was to examine the incidence of contamination of these drops and the potential risks for complications associated with its use. Discussion includes situations in which to consider the use of plasma or serum drops as well as the frequency and duration of therapy.
