Cobalamin deficiency (vitamin B12 deficiency) is common in dogs with chronic GI disorders (prevalence, 6%-73%). Fortunately, cobalamin deficiency typically responds well and safely to parenteral vitamin B12 supplementation - which has been the standard of care in treating dogs with hypocobalaminemia. Oral vitamin B12 supplementation has been established as effective as parenteral vitamin B12 in several studies of humans with hypocobalaminemia.
