Dr. Phil Zeltzman discusses management of open wounds including lavage and topical
therapies that can augment wound healing.
Regarding the dressings discussed:
1) Sugar dressing application: a 1 cm layer of granulated sugar is applied to
the wound and covered with a thick dressing (to absorb fluid drawn from the wound).
The dressing should be changed once daily or more frequently if there is strike-through.
The wound should be copiously lavaged with warm saline or tap water during bandage changes.
2) Honey dressing application: Manuka honey-soaked gauze is applied over the wound
(as the base / contact layer of a dressing) and bandaged. The dressing / bandage
should be changed daily or more frequently with strike-through.
