Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is one of the most frustrating and complex skin conditions encountered in veterinary practice. This chronic condition is an inflammatory and pruritic (itchy) skin disease associated with environmental allergens including pollens, dust mites, and molds. While the condition is not curable, early recognition, accurate diagnosis, and a multimodal treatment approach can dramatically improve a dog’s quality of life. Because the disease is chronic and often involves flare-ups, it can also be a major source of stress and frustration for both pet owners and veterinary teams.
In this session - the first of two presentations on the topic of caring for dogs with atopic dermatitis - Dr. Pieper begins the discussion of allergic skin disease by explaining:
- Our current understanding of the cause and pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis in dogs
- How to appropriately diagnose canine atopic dermatitis
- Where diet can be beneficial to management of affected dogs
- How topical therapy can be beneficial and which therapies should be considered
- The role of supplements and how they can be beneficial in patient management
Running time: 1 hr 8 mins (including 13 mins of Q&A)
Approved for 1 hour of CE credit by AAVSB RACE and NY State
