When it comes to pain management we know that a multimodal approach works best for most patients. Our toolbox for treating chronic arthritis pain typically includes NSAIDs in combination with different things including nutraceuticals, joint care diets, opioids, stem cells, and various other physical medicine modalities.
Cats are not small dogs and, when it comes to treating cats for pain, our pharmacologic options are a bit more limited. Furthermore, it's not always easy to administer medications to cats.
In this segment Dr. Margaret Gruen discusses a newer therapy that has just been approved for use in treating cats in the last few weeks (in the U.S.). Dr. Gruen discusses Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and how anti-NGF monoclonal antibody therapies offer a novel way to provide long-lasting pain control for animals with osteoarthritis.
